Investigations into Responses of Cylindrical Shells to Random Acoustic Excitation

Abstract

The response of a structure to random acoustic excitation is dependent on the modal densities, mechanical damping, and radiation efficiency, as well as the acoustic response of the surrounding medium. This thesis describes the analytical and experimental problems associated with the evaluation of the parameters, and an attempt is made to obtain practical values of these parameters in the particular case of a flanged cylindrical vessel. The object of the work was to provide accurate basic information which could be used to investigate noise transmission in aircraft structures. Various methods of measuring and/or calculating the above-mentioned paramters have been investigated and experimental techniques developed which will provide more accurate evaluation of the paramters.
