Crystallization and Separation of Pentaerythritol from Lubricating Oil Dispersant Additives

Abstract

In the industrial production of a lubricating oil dispersant additive pentaerythritol (PE) is reacted with polyisobutenyl succinic anhydride (PIBSA). The sediment obtained is difficult to separate due to many factors also there is usually an increase in the sediment level during the storage of the product. The main objectives of this work were to improve the solid/liquid separation and to identify and eliminate the cause of the sediment formation during storage. During the course of the investigation the kinetics of the PIBSA/PE reaction were studied in a stirred, 1 dm3. reaction vessel and the results were used to develop an approximate, rate expression of the form
