Complex valued kernels for mitigation of signal distortions in parametrically amplified optical links

Abstract

The limitation of the achievable signal gain due to stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) poses a major challenge to the integration of fibre-optical parametric amplifiers (FOPAs) in optical links. Although broadening the pump source via external phase modulation is a very effective SBS mitigation technique, it introduces temporal fluctu-ations in the parametric gain, which affect the phase and amplitude of the amplified signals. Our recent research has indicated that digital signal processing (DSP) tailored for FOPAs could offer a viable solution to their broader adoption in communication networks [1]–[3].
