Abstract
Muslim women are underrepresented in German politics. From an intersectional perspective and based on qualitative interviews with Muslim female politicians, this article identifies obstacles and enablers for the political representation of Muslim women in Germany. The analysis demonstrates that the combination of a limited pool of candidates and still insufficient efforts by political parties is responsible for the underrepresentation. Overall, these obstacles and success factors resemble those already identified for female politicians with migration background. At the same time, the analysis illustrates that religion as a category of difference cuts across migration background, suggesting that both categories have to be analysed separately if obstacles in politics, especially for visible minorities, are to be comprehended in greater detail.
