Abstract

Recent years have seen an increasing awareness of the importance of a pro-active approach to safety management in creating a positive organisational safety culture. This is reflected in the move from a rule­-based to a risk-based approach to British and European health and safety legislation. This study explores the role of risk assessment within a safety management system and its importance with respect to the safety culture of an organisation.
