Some Applications of Computers in Group Technology

Abstract

This thesis concerns principally the use and adaptation of some computer based information systems during a project to implement Group Technology in part of a large, complex, multi-product company. The approaches adopted and methods used in the implementation and operation of the new principles are discussed with particular reference to computer solutions for problems of: - data provision, analysis and synthesis during an analytical approach to re-designing part of the company's organisation based on cellular principles - adapting an existing production control system to support a cellular shop floor organisation and reinforce the benefits of Group Technology - economic assessment of the benefits gained through operating a trial cell before extending the implementation to other parts of the organisation. In addition, some particular social, technical and organisational problems that were encountered during the implementation are discussed. Some ideas are given for reducing these problems and extending the implementation to other parts of the company. It is concluded that computer based information systems can have a considerable impact on a project to install Group Technology and on the methods used to maintain the effectiveness of the new manufacturing system.
