Abstract
It has been known for some time that the excited state of the tris(2,2'-bipyridine) ruthenium (11) dication, Ru(blpy) 2+3, Is thermodynamically capable of facilitating the photochemical cleavage of water Into dihydrogen and dioxygen. Surfactant derivatives of Ru(blpy) 2+3 as monolayers 16 and contained on dispersed particles 36 have enabled the cleavage reaction, but irreproducibly. Solution studies have tended to use the surfactant as an intermediary or relay In the cleavage reaction....
