Industrial technologies for slow pyrolysis

Abstract

This chapter classifies and analyses the technologies available in industry for slow pyrolysis. Depending on the mode of operation, these technologies are classified into batch, semi-continuous and continuous processes; each of them with different characteristics, advantages and disadvantages. Different criteria to help with the choice of a reactor are briefly introduced with all the gathered information presented. Also, the introduction of the reactor in the system is briefly explained, different options for the pre- and post-treatment of the materials are described. In addition to the reactor design, Techno-Economic Assessment (TEA) is explained with all associated costs and economic evaluation methods. The chapter concludes with an explanation of the challenges in the design of this type of reactor, addressing different possibilities for the upcoming research.
